Author: Edward S.Curtis
Title: Portraits from North American Indian Life
Publisher: Outerbridge & Lazard : New York, 1972
Description of book: FirsEdition. Published in Association with the American Museum of Natural History; distributed by Dutton. First edition, first printing. Oblong folio, approx. 15×18 inches. The 81 sepia prints contained within are near-full-size images of part of Curtis’s monumental work of 2500 photographs. His immense project, while well-known, was not widely viewed before his death, because the size of the original sets were so large that they quickly disappeared into rare book rooms and institutions, out of easy reach even for scholars. The publication of this size of book made Curtis available for view by the larger audience. ‘Portraits of The North American Indian’ will probably come to be recognized as the most profound document of Native American culture ever made.
Condition of book: Near fine in quarter cloth as issued without wrapper.
